Recent conceptual advances in the catalysis science of mixed metal oxide catalytic materials
نویسنده
چکیده
The catalysis science of mixed metal oxides (supported metal oxides, molecular sieves and bulk mixed metal oxides) has undergone dramatic paradigm changes over the past 25 years as new characterization techniques became available (X-ray absorption spectroscopy (EXAFS/XANES/soft XANES), Raman, solid-state NMR, HR-TEM, UV–vis DRS and LEISS) to catalysis researchers. The major advantages offered by these spectroscopic improvements are that (1) they can detect XRD inactive amorphous surface metal oxide phases as well as crystalline nanophases and (2) their ability to collect information under various environmental conditions. Application of these spectroscopic techniques to the investigation of mixed metal oxide catalysts have provided new fundamental insights into the electronic and molecular structures of mixed metal oxide catalytic active sites and how they control the catalytic activity and selectivity characteristics. The most significant discovery has been that amorphous metal oxide phases are always present and are the catalytic active sites for many applications of mixed metal oxide catalysts. This has resulted in a significant paradigm shift as to how mixed metal oxide catalytic materials function for different applications. This article reviews the instrumental advances and the resulting conceptual advances that have evolved over the past 25 years in the catalysis science of mixed metal oxide catalysts. # 2004 Elsevier B.V. متن کاملA general synthetic strategy for oxide-supported metal nanoparticle catalysts.
Despite recent exciting progress in catalysis by supported gold nanoparticles, there remains the formidable challenge of preparing supported gold catalysts that collectively incorporate precise control over factors such as size and size-distribution of the gold nanoparticles, homogeneous dispersion of the particles on the support, and the ability to utilize a wide range of supports that profoun...
متن کاملCatalytic and Non-catalytic Conversion of Methane to C2 Hydrocarbons in a Low Temperature Plasma
The direct conversion of methane to C2 hydrocarbons, in a quartz tube reactor enforced by a DC corona discharge, was investigated at atmospheric pressure. The process was carried out in the presence of metal oxide catalysts of Mn/W/SiO2, Mn/W/SiO2 (tetraethyl orthosilicate, TEOS), and Mn/W/CNT (supported on carbon nanotubes). The total yield to C2 hydrocarbons in the presence of metal oxide cat...
متن کاملNew catalytic concepts from new materials: understanding catalysis from a fundamental perspective, past, present, and future
The thesis of this review is that new catalytic concepts may be derived or discovered from new materials or newly recognized material properties. This thesis is demonstrated by a brief discussion of four materials, and the associated concepts, which enjoyed a certain fashion in the Journal of Catalysis and became themes of the author’s research. The four materials (or material properties) descr...
